What this guide covers

Understand Western Easter, its related dates and the limits of predicting local lunar observances.

Western Easter follows ecclesiastical calendar rules

Western Easter is calculated using the Gregorian ecclesiastical calendar. Its familiar description involving an equinox and a full moon is a simplified summary. The calculation uses an ecclesiastical equinox and a tabulated moon rather than directly observing that year's astronomical full moon.

The result is a Sunday that can occur on different Gregorian dates. The lab calculates it from the requested year. It does not reuse the previous year's day number or require a stored list for every future year.

The Easter countdown labels its convention as Western Easter. Other Christian traditions can follow a different calendar method and produce a different Gregorian date. The label matters when planning an observance for a specific community.

Worked example using Easter in 2028

Western Easter Sunday falls on April 16, 2028. Subtracting two calendar days gives Good Friday on April 14. Subtracting 21 gives Mothering Sunday on March 26. Subtracting 46 gives Ash Wednesday on March 1.

These offsets cross real month boundaries. The result is not produced by treating every month as 30 days. Use the date calculator to subtract the offsets and inspect the resulting weekday.

The different dates share a coherent rule. Editing one displayed holiday to an arbitrary date without preserving that relationship would break the schedule. The recurrence engine evaluates the rule and its related offsets together.

Lunar and lunisolar observances need a stated calendar

Not every movable observance follows Easter's rules. An Islamic calendar month belongs to a lunar system. Chinese calendar dates belong to a lunisolar system. Indian religious dates can also involve local calendar and observance rules.

A Gregorian fixed-date recurrence is not an appropriate substitute. A lunar observance can move across the seasons relative to the Gregorian calendar. A lunisolar calendar can insert an additional month to remain aligned with the solar year.

A useful page identifies the calendar, location and status of its date. A projected date is different from an official local announcement. When the source has not confirmed a date the lab explains that limitation and links to a personal countdown for a confirmed input.

A local announcement can matter more than a projection

Some observances depend on a local religious authority or moon-sighting decision. A predicted date can help plan a tentative schedule. It does not establish every community's official starting day.

Record the location and authority when using a date for travel, attendance or a public event. The public holiday associated with an observance can also differ from the observance's opening evening or full religious period.

The distinction is particularly useful for business-day calculations. A religious date is not automatically a public closure in every country. Load the applicable holiday calendar or enter the confirmed closed dates as custom exclusions.

Use the right page for the right planning question

For Western Easter and its linked dates use the rule-based countdowns. For an exact local observance use the announced date and the personal countdown calculator. For a working schedule use a country or regional closure list.

Keep the calendar convention visible when sharing a result. “Western Easter 2028” is more precise than an unlabeled Easter date. A holiday date and an office's observed closure also need separate labels.

Read annual recurrence and rollover for the update behavior. Read calendar days and business days before applying an observance to a deadline calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Easter based on the exact astronomical full moon?

Western Easter follows ecclesiastical tables. The common equinox-and-full-moon description is a simplified explanation.

Why can two Easter calendars show different dates?

Different Christian traditions can use different ecclesiastical calendar methods.

Can Ramadan or Diwali repeat on the same Gregorian date every year?

No. Their calendar and local observance rules differ from a fixed Gregorian month-and-day recurrence.
