How to use subtract time durations

  1. Enter the hours, minutes and seconds of both durations.
  2. Choose addition or subtraction.
  3. Read the normalized total and its sign before converting it to decimal hours.

Subtract one duration from another and keep the result’s positive or negative direction.

How the result is calculated

Total seconds = hours × 3,600 + minutes × 60 + seconds

Signed results preserve the calculation’s direction. Read the sign before comparing its magnitude. Keep the inputs and the selected convention with the output so another person can reproduce it.

How to read your result

Keep the inputs and conventions beside the answer. These values explain what the result measures.

Result fieldMeaning
Normalized durationOne sign for the whole amount, followed by hours and minute/second remainders.
Total secondsThe common-unit value used for the arithmetic.
Decimal hoursTotal seconds divided by 3,600; distinct from hours:minutes notation.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Minutes carry into the next hour

1 hour 45 minutes plus 2 hours 30 minutes equals 4 hours 15 minutes. In decimal hours that is 4.25, not 4.15.

Try the example in the calculator above. Change one input at a time and compare the target, interval and selected rules. For a longer explanation read Add and Subtract Durations: Hours, Minutes, Seconds and Decimal Totals.

Conventions to keep with your result

These are fixed durations, not clock times or calendar months. A negative subtraction result keeps its direction. Minutes and seconds in each input range from zero through 59.

Current dates keep moving forward. Today follows the selected calendar time zone. Rule-based Gregorian dates are generated for the requested year. A fixed input remains the visitor's chosen date. External holiday records require coverage for that year.

Subtract Time Durations: frequently asked questions

Can the result exceed 24 hours?

Yes. A duration does not wrap at midnight.

Is 4 hours 15 minutes equal to 4.15 hours?

No. It is 4 + 15/60 = 4.25 decimal hours.

What if the second duration is longer?

Subtraction produces a negative signed duration.
