What this guide covers
Calculate an exact duration and avoid confusing overnight times with calendar-day totals.
A duration needs complete boundaries
A clock time by itself is not enough to describe an overnight interval. A start at 10 PM and an end at 2 AM can refer to the next date or a reversed interval on the same date. Entering complete date-times removes that ambiguity.
The time between two times calculator uses a date with each clock reading. The duration is the end instant minus the start instant. A reversed interval produces a negative duration rather than silently assuming the next day.
For an overnight shift select the following calendar date for the end. For a shift crossing more than one midnight select its actual ending date. The tool does not infer an employer's break or payroll policy from those boundaries.
Hours, minutes and seconds are fixed duration units
One minute contains 60 seconds. One hour contains 60 minutes. A fixed 24-hour duration contains 86,400 seconds. These conversions describe duration units rather than a calendar month or an anniversary year.
A result of 8.5 hours means eight hours and thirty minutes. It does not mean eight hours and fifty minutes. Decimal-hour notation uses a fraction of an hour. Convert the fraction to minutes by multiplying it by 60.
The time unit converter converts fixed units from seconds through weeks. Calendar months and years are excluded from that conversion because their duration depends on the dates being compared.
Worked example: an overnight interval
Start at 10:15 PM on January 10, 2027 and end at 6:45 AM on January 11. In a time zone without a clock transition during that interval the duration is eight hours and thirty minutes. It is 8.5 hours, 510 minutes or 30,600 seconds.
If both clock readings are entered on January 10 the end precedes the start. The signed result becomes negative. The dates are therefore part of the calculation rather than optional decoration around the times.
| Representation | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours and minutes | 8 hours 30 minutes |
| Decimal hours | 8.5 |
| Total minutes | 510 |
| Total seconds | 30,600 |
A local clock transition can change the duration
Subtracting displayed clock hours without their time-zone rules can give the wrong elapsed duration near daylight-saving transitions. A local interval can skip an hour when clocks move forward or repeat an hour when clocks move back.
The local date-time tools use the browser's local zone. A date-only tool instead compares calendar dates independently of those clock changes. Its hour total is labeled as a day-equivalent conversion.
Read countdown and time-zone conventions before comparing those results. For a critical repeated or skipped local time establish a UTC instant rather than relying on an ambiguous local label.
Elapsed duration is not automatically paid time
A start-to-end duration includes everything between the boundaries. It does not subtract meal breaks, unpaid pauses or time outside a contract's working window. Those adjustments need their own stated rules.
An overnight interval of eight and a half hours with a half-hour unpaid break has eight hours after that break is subtracted. The elapsed duration remains eight and a half. Keep those quantities labeled separately.
A public date calculator can support the arithmetic without determining a payroll policy. Check the relevant agreement when rounding, break treatment or daylight-saving changes affect payable hours.
Read the result with its dates and zone
- Confirm both calendar dates and clock readings.
- Use the next date for a genuinely overnight interval.
- Check the browser's local time-zone label.
- Read the sign before using the magnitude.
- Keep decimal hours distinct from clock-style notation.
- Apply any breaks or rounding under a separate rule.
Copy the full result rather than transferring an unlabeled decimal. Use the hours tool for the elapsed total and the unit converter for another fixed-duration representation.
The meeting time-zone guide helps when the boundaries come from different locations. Convert them to an agreed instant-based reference before comparing them.
To combine known amounts, use Add Time Durations or Subtract Time Durations. For a dated shift with a chosen break deduction, use the Work Hours & Breaks Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How are overnight intervals entered?
Enter the actual end date after midnight. The tool does not silently assume the following day.
Does 8.5 hours mean 8 hours 50 minutes?
No. Half an hour is 30 minutes, so 8.5 hours means 8 hours 30 minutes.
Does the calculator subtract unpaid breaks?
The elapsed-duration tools do not deduct breaks. Use the Work Hours & Breaks Calculator for an explicitly entered break duration; it does not decide pay or break-entitlement rules.
