How the result is calculated

Remaining duration = target instant − current instant

The calculator validates the required dates, units and range before producing a result. Keep the inputs and the selected convention with the output so another person can reproduce it.

How to read your result

Keep the inputs and conventions beside the answer. These values explain what the result measures.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A day label is not a fixed 24-hour promise

A date-only event tomorrow can have one calendar day remaining when midnight is only minutes away. An exact-time countdown shows those minutes instead.

Try the example in the calculator above. Change one input at a time and compare the target, interval and selected rules. For a longer explanation read Countdowns and Time Zones: Calendar Days vs. Exact Time.

Conventions to keep with your result

Local inputs use the browser time zone. Near a repeated or skipped local hour, confirm the exact UTC instant. Annual timers preserve the originally entered month and day.

Current dates keep moving forward. Today follows the selected calendar time zone. Rule-based Gregorian dates are generated for the requested year. A fixed input remains the visitor's chosen date. External holiday records require coverage for that year.

School Countdown: frequently asked questions

Does a one-time timer repeat the next year?

No. It completes at the target. Annual repetition must be selected.

How is February 29 handled in an annual timer?

Its occurrence clamps to February 28 in a common year and returns to February 29 when that date exists.

Will the timer run if the page is closed?

The target does not depend on the page staying open. Reopening with a saved share link recalculates the remaining duration from the current instant.
