Calculate a dated shift’s elapsed hours and deduct a chosen break duration.

How the result is calculated

Net work duration = end instant − start instant − entered break duration

The calculator validates the required dates, units and range before producing a result. Keep the inputs and the selected convention with the output so another person can reproduce it.

How to read your result

Keep the inputs and conventions beside the answer. These values explain what the result measures.

Result fieldMeaning
Net work timeGross elapsed duration minus only the break amount entered.
Gross minutesThe duration between the dated local start and end instants.
Break deductionThe visitor’s chosen duration, without automatic policy or compensation decisions.
WORKED EXAMPLE

An overnight shift needs both dates

January 10, 2027 at 10 PM through January 11 at 6 AM spans eight hours in a zone without a transition. A 30-minute break leaves 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.5 decimal hours.

Try the example in the calculator above. Change one input at a time and compare the target, interval and selected rules. For a longer explanation read Work Hours, Breaks and Overnight Shifts: Calculate Elapsed Time.

Conventions to keep with your result

The tool applies the entered break only. Browser-local time rules determine elapsed duration. It does not decide compensation, overtime, rounding, minimum breaks or a legal entitlement.

Current dates keep moving forward. Today follows the selected calendar time zone. Rule-based Gregorian dates are generated for the requested year. A fixed input remains the visitor's chosen date. External holiday records require coverage for that year.

Work Hours & Breaks Calculator: frequently asked questions

Are breaks deducted automatically?

Only the break duration you enter is deducted.

What if the break exceeds the shift?

The input is rejected rather than showing negative work hours.
